La réserve de Biosphère de la Mare aux Hippopotames de Bala is part of the Tentative list of Burkina Faso in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
The Hippo Pond of Bala is a vast freshwater lake that sees high numbers of migratory birds and is home to some 100 hippopotamuses. The surrounding landscape is made up of Sudano-Guinea savanna. Bala Lake is already protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a RAMSAR wetland.
